The British Regional Finals (or F2’s too many) was the first opportunity for some of the Schumacher guys to run the pre production Cat SX’s.

Schumacher drivers James Helliwell, Nathan Waters and Richard Sharpe were racing the CAT for the very first time, with Nathan and Richard looking to continue their form having finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the 2wd class.  Most of the cars were direct from the Stotfold national, with Andrew Jones running the Simon Moss car, Nathan running the Matt White car, James running the car that had been campaigned by Grant Williams. David Hall was also running one of the test cars. All of these guys were on site to support their cars, good support from the whole team was backed up by Phil Booth

Right from the off the guys were right on the pace, with Richard Sharpe taking the win in round 1. A very good start considering he hadn’t ever driven the car until that morning, and had to run a borrowed body shell for practice until his own arrived. Andrew and James were also on for very good results until crashes put paid to their runs. Nathan made a steady start with 6th in this round.

Round 2 and it was James’s turn to be near the top of the time sheets with a 2nd in this round. Nathan and Andrew put in solid runs with 5th and 6th respectively in this run.

Round 3 and Richard was back on it with another 1st in the round to add to his score. This meant that he was guaranteed a front row start in the finals. Nathan continued his upward trend with a 4th, Andrew 6th and James 7th.

Round 4 and Nathan found a balance that he was much happier with, this allowed him to finish 1st in this round, with a time that was the fastest of the day. This was good enough to allow him to climb up to 3rd overall. Andrew was also on the up with a 3rd, and James 5th. Richard suffered motor problems, so had to rely on his previous scores. This meant that all 4 of them had made the A final on their first outings.

On to the finals and most were confident that they had good cars under them and could make a solid impact on the 3 leg A finals.

From the tone in leg 1 Nathan was able to pick up a place very early into the run and had a small opening to potentially move into the lead. Nathan did move into the lead inside the first minute of the run. Andrew had an eventful start to the run and was at the very back of the field, and James was heavily involved with the mid pack. As the run came into the final minute, James had battled his way through to 2nd and was putting Nathan under a lot of pressure. They exchanged the lead numerous times in the last 2 laps, however Nathan was able to hold on. Andrew had also made some very strong progress and was able to put on a move on the final lap to give himself 3rd.

Leg 2 had an interesting factor in the weather. There had been a small shower on the track. Not enough to seriously wet it and not enough for a tyre change, however it did definitely reduce the grip levels. Nathan did not make a good start, and was at the back of the field after 2 corners. There was a lot of action in the early part of this final. Nathan had a controlled drive in the early laps and was able to pick up places and got up to 2nd. He then settled into this position which he held to the end. Andrew was running mid pack for most of the run, but suffered a small problem toward the end, but then slipped back to 9th. Richard again was unlucky with motor problems before the start of the final.

Leg 3 and it was still up in the open. Nathan and James were in position to win the meeting in this final leg. James would need to win the leg in a faster time than Nathan did in leg 1. Once again there was a lot of action in the 1st 2 corners. Richard this time made a good start, and led for 2 laps. Then a small error saw him slip back a little. James Chapple made his way through to the front to take a lead that he was not to lose. Nathan got into 2nd, where was involved in a race long fight for this position with Arslann Butt. As things were Nathan was in position to take the meeting. This was the way things stayed at the front. A little further back, Andrew Jones and James Heliwell were involved in a battle for 4th in the leg. As they came into the last corner, anything was still possible. Andrew managed to win the drag race to the line for 4th in this leg. So, it ended that Nathan won the meeting with the Cat SX powered by a Speed Passion 5.5 motor and Schumacher XVS cells.
